Google has released a new advert this week just in time for the holiday season, demonstrating their new Google Photo Sphere features on the Nexus 4 smartphone. Watch the video after the jump to learn more about the Google’s Photo Sphere feature and see it in action.

Google’s Nexus 4 smartphone has become an incredibly popular device, so much so that Google and LG have been unable to keep up with the demand for the Nexus 4, and the 8GB model has been sold out for a while and the 16GB model was listed as shipping on 5 to 6 weeks.

Now the 16GB version of the Google Nexus 4 is also listed as sold out on Google’s website, and there are no details as yet on when the device will be back in stock
The main reason that Google are having trouble keeping up with the demand for the handset is the price, the Nexus 4 is basically sold at cost, which means when compared to similar devices it is much cheaper.

Obviously Google did not think that selling a smartphone at close to cost price would be met with massive demand, otherwise they would have ensured that there was more stock of the handset before they launched it.

The LG Nexus 4 is either a great new flagship, or a half-baked device missing several important features, depending on who you ask. Unfortunately it looks like the latter is getting a little more ammunition as it’s recently surfaced that the Nexus 4 has no USB OTG (on-the-go) support. USB OTG cables allow users to connect a mouse, keyboard, flash drive, etc. to the phone to set it up as a more powerful workstation or add more memory to a phone that, like the Nexus 4, has no other expandable storage.

Originally, the Nexus 4 specs did say it supported USB connections just like the Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and Galaxy Nexus. Now, however, the support page lists connecting devices via bluetooth and clearly saying that USB connections are not supported. There’s been some speculation over whether this is a matter of hardware or just a software bug, but since the bigger brothers in the Nexus line still have USB OTG support, I think it’s more likely to be hardware. Of course, for that crazy price point Google hit with the Nexus 4, it’s not surprising that some cuts had to be made.

September is a very busy month when it comes to media events announcing new products targeting the Christmas shopping season but also when it comes to rumors related to upcoming devices.

With that in mind, we’ll remind you that Motorola and Google held yesterday their first joint media event since the extraordinarily expensive $12.5 billion buyout was completed to announced a variety of RAZR-branded devices, but no Nexus device, as some people may have hoped for – it’s worth mentioning there were no pre-event rumors pointing to such a handset, but one can always hope. Another Motorola presser will follow on September 18, although we don’t expect any Nexus device to be unveiled during it.

A Nexus 7 tablet with wireless connectivity is also expected to hit stores in the following weeks, probably as a direct response to Amazon’s upcoming Kindle Fire 2 and Apple’s rumored iPad Mini both of which are expected to support 3G/4G features.

Should such devices be announced by the end of the year, then Verizon, the nation’s largest mobile operator, will surely want to carry some of them, if not all, so it can convince as many of its subscribers but also other customers to sign up for a 4G LTE device.The Samsung Galaxy Nexus or the Motorola Xoom are not “newly launched”.

It’s funny how Android tablets have turned the table against Apple’s iPad just when we’ve almost given up on that fight. After the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7’s booming hits, I think that no one can deny Android is on the rise. Apple might still be king of tablets, but both Amazon’s and Google’s 7-inchers rocked the Cupertino-based company’s throne. We hope this will spark a revolution of much bigger dimensions than we Android fans could have dreamed of a year ago.

However, while we know that the Nexus 7 was met with an almost unprecedented high degree of enthusiasm, we’re still in a blur about the tab’s actual sales. Nobody has even dared to come up with estimates, while predictions for the future have been entirely out of the question.

The editorial team over at Tech-Thoughts.net has been brave enough to venture a sales estimate for the Nexus 7, as well as a prediction for up to the end of the year. The figures are obviously to be taken with a grain of salt, but they are a bit more than just educated guesses, so they have to be at least acknowledged.The Fire supposedly shipped in 3.9 million units during Q4 2011, its first fiscal quarter of existence, while Q1 2012 saw that figure drop to only 1.8 million. Summing those two numbers up, we get around 5.7 million unit sales for the Fire’s first two fiscal quarters, which would be below the Nexus 7’s estimated sales, even if they only hit the minimum prediction of Tech-Thoughts.

It is true that Amazon’s 7-incher was released on November 15, halfway into Q4 2011. But on the other hand, that meant the tablet was hotter than hot during the holiday season. That said, the Nexus 7 can easily beat the Kindle Fire’s sales figures, or at least they will end up tied. It’s likely that we’re dealing with another big hit from Android in its war with Apple.

The Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S got the update to Android 4.1 (aka Jelly Bean) recently, and now here's some more good news if you own either handset. Google has released the Jelly Bean factory images for both phones.


These factory images let you go back to the standard settings quickly and easily, which is handy if you got a bit too custom-happy when fiddling with your phone.The Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus were the two first handsets to get a taste of Jelly Bean. The Nexus 7 tablet has it on board too, and some owners of the Motorola Xoom reported seeing it last week, though Motorola and Google have kept mum on the matter. HTC's One X and One S will get Jelly Bean soon, as will Asus' Transformer line of tablets, though there's no date given for these. So it could be months yet, though let's hope not.


Jelly Bean brings a new and improved Voice Search, which looks like it shames Siri for speed and accuracy. The whole interface has been given a spring clean, making it more responsive, and it features Google Now as well.

The Google Nexus 7 is probably the greatest thing to happen to tablets after the iPad - it brought high-end specs to affordable slates and emphasized quality despite the low price, but so far demand for it was so high it sold out in many stores. In the UK, it’s just about to launch on the country’s largest retailer Carphone Warehouse. 

The European debut of the Nexus 7 will happen on July 27th in the UK, and the price is set at £199, or $310. The price should be for the most basic, 8 gig version of the tablet, but the retailer doesn’t specify in the annonucement. Still, that’s a hefty 50% more than the US price, but don’t be too surprised - electronics on the Old continent tend to be more expensive due to a number of factors.

Interestingly, Carphone Warehouse will sell the Nexus 7 off contract and on a tethered contract. The Nexus 7 doesn’t have cellular connectivity but you can use your smartphone data with Wi-Fi tethering. Such an option will let you have the device free at launch but you’d need to pay £20.50, or nearly $32, a month for tethering

Carphone Warehouse are the latest retailer to give a date for the tablet’s release, and their website says that they’ll have the Nexus 7 in stock from 27 July; that’s a mere two days away! By itself, the tablet will cost a reasonable £199 (16GB model), or you can pick it up for free on a £20.50 p/m contract.




The Nexus 7 is hugely impressive for its price range, sporting a quad-core Cortex-A9 processor on the Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset, meaning it fieatures GeForce graphics. It also has 1GB of ram and squeezes in an impressive 216ppi on its 1280×800 7″ screen.




The Nexus 7 is Google’s first device to come pre-installed with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which promises a much quicker OS experience and an improved interface.




Now time for more retailers to get the tablet so we can start seeing some even more competitive prices for the powerful little tablet.The 16GB version of the tablet will be offered for £199 for the 16GB model or for free on a £20.50 per month tethered contract.
