NTT Docomo has announced NEC Medias W (N-05E) in the docomo NEXT series in their Spring 2013 line-up. This Android smartphone comes with dual 4.3-inch (540 x 960 pixels ) displays that can also fold, so that you can use it as a single screen. Both these displays create a square of 5.6-inch display that would offer more screen real estate to use keyboard in one screen, while using SNS apps, browsing and watching videos. Even though we have already seen Kyocera Echo and the Sony Tablet S2 back in 2011 with dual touch screen displays, this one seems better in terms of implementation and design.

It is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 processor and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). It has a 8.1 MP rear camrea with LED Flash, BSI sensor but lacks a front-facing camera. Considering the from factor, this phone is just 12.2 mm thick, but weighs about 183 grams.

Well guys, it is finally that time of year again. The time where around 150,000 tech fans descend on my city of Las Vegas for the biggest tech trade show of the year. It’s CES time! As you all know this is where we’ll see the latest and greatest consumer electronics of all types, shapes and sizes. We’ll be focusing heavily on Android obviously, and we have a lot planned so get ready for some fun.

We say get ready for fun, and that is because you guys will be enjoying hands-on pictures, videos, details, and interviews of all the upcoming gadgets we can’t wait to try. Samsung, LG, Toshiba, ASUS, HTC, Motorola, Sony, Huawei, drinks… yes please, and much more. We call it “hell week” but for you readers it’s all about the excitement of what’s coming. Another way to explain CES is by calling it a beautiful disaster — because that’s what it is.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say we love it too, because we do. Tomorrow we’ll be gathering the troops and flying across the country while getting ready to enjoy the warm Vegas desert, NFL playoffs, BCS games, and of course smartphones! It’s hard to get going after we just smashed tons of food and snacks for the holidays (read: food coma) but rest assured we are ready to rock with 4G LTE smartphones, hotspots, tethering apps, cameras, tripods and more. You name it, we’ve got it. Here’s what I’m bringing (kidding).The Las Vegas Convention Center and surroundings will be filled with all sorts of goodies. We’ll be focusing on smartphones, tablets, Android powered toys and devices, and of course a few TVs I’m sure. Not to mention flexible displays (hopefully), Octa-core processors, new battery technology and more. We’ll probably check out tons of cars with Android displays, and hopefully a few Android home automation items. The possibilities truly are endless at CES, and we’d be here forever trying to list them all out. I’ll be checking out that 150-inch LED TV for a few minutes, but that doesn’t concern you guys.

While we’re not expecting to see the Samsung Galaxy S IV or their rumored Note III, surely there will be tons of smartphones to grace your minds with excitement. Google won’t unveil the next Nexus, but surely they’ll have plenty of fun things to share. We already know this year will be all about large 1080p HD displays, powerhouse quad-core processors exceeding 2.0 GHz, 13 megapixel cameras, NFC controlled doors, cars, and so much more. Ahhh, are you excited?

Years ago, who would have thought that our phones would be able to run/emulate PC games? Thanks to the power of our smartphones and an app called the Winulator, it looks like sometime in the near future, Android users will be able to run Starcraft’s Brood Wars on their phone.

This isn’t the first time that Starcraft has been ported onto Android devices. You might remember one method that involved an N64 emulator, but that was said to be laggy and a messy process. Winulator is not really an emulator, but an app that allows the running of Windows API alongside ARM friendly code using a tool that converts EXE and DLL files into ARM readable code.

Support for Starcraft with Winulator is still being worked on. Its developer stated that you can run Caesar III on Winulator if you want to see what the experience might be like.

The year is almost over (in fact, we’re less than 24 hours a way if your calendar hasn’t been working as of late) and it’s time to take a look at what the best devices of 2012 have turned out to be. There were many heavy hitters from the camps of Samsung, Motorola, HTC and more, but only five — yes, five — make the cut for Phandroid’s year-in review. Let’s dive in!

Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD
When Google completed the purchase of Motorola in 2012 it promised the company would continue to run as a separate entity for quite some time afterward. Still, it was hard to believe Google wouldn’t have any influence on the future of Motorola’s smartphone line even if that influence didn’t come right away.

While we can’t say for sure Google had much to do with the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD in body (after all, the overall package is an incremental improvement over the 2011 relaunch of the RAZR family), it does appear the company got Motorola to ease up on MOTOBLUR (or whatever they are calling it these days).

With a 4.7 inch HD display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Plus chipset, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean this smartphone reads off like most high-end offerings from 2012, but some of its more unique bits give it the #7 spot on this list. Subtleties like the Kevlar backing, the device’s long-lasing 3,100mAh battery and its slim profile make it a device worthy of recognition this year.

LG Optimus G

LG had to deal with some costly plunders in 2011, but the Korean OEM looked to bounce back quite nicely in 2012. One of the results of LG’s desperation (the company was losing money hand-over-first) was the LG Optimus G, a fine device if I do say so myself. It’s a quad-core monster of a phone that has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro and 2GB of RAM.

Despite its good looks and powerful innards, though, it’s the software improvements that earns LG’s flagship a spot on this list. Optimus UI 3.0 was a big focus of LG’s, and the time and money spent to perfect it showed up in quality form. Things like Q-Slide, QuickMemo, voice-activated controls and LG’s motion controls made it quite the significant package.

The biggest improvement was the lack of experience-breaking bugs that plagued the Optimus 2X before it, and had LG not cracked down on the software letdowns of yesteryear it might not have gotten the nod for this list. Kudos.



HTC One X+

The original HTC One X was a great device in and of itself, but this revision completely overshadowed it. Courtesy of AT&T, it was the first Sense device here in the US that came with NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 processor as well as 4G LTE radios. It didn’t change much else over the original HTC One X, but that particular phone was already fine enough on its own merit.

This device also brought 64GB of internal storage goodness, something that’s quite unheard of in the land of Android these days. It’s something we were mightily grateful for as HTC and AT&T understood not everyone is willing to move over to the cloud, and that internal device storage is still something many of us value quite a bit.
It houses the same 8 megapixel f/2.0 BSI HD camera with an HD front-facing camera, a 4.7 inch 720p SuperLCD2 display and all the other great bells and whistles found on the original, and all of that still remains some of the best smartphone tech available today.

Samsung Galaxy S3

Ah, yes — Samsung’s mother load. The Samsung Galaxy S3 doesn’t command the top spot of this list, but perhaps that’s due to its untimely release. Samsung brought its wares out earlier in the year, and that allowed other devices (even some of their own) to outclass it in many different ways.
Still, this is one iconic device that has significantly changed the landscape of the mobile wars. It broke sales records on its way to helping Samsung become the second biggest smartphone OEM, and the biggest mobile phone OEM in all. It was the first device that really gave the iPhone a run for its money in terms of success, and we all know it was a force to be reckoned with when it came to features.

The Galaxy S3 in America housed more modest internals due to LTE-compatible Exynos chips not being ready for prime-time at the time of its launch, but the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 still performed quite well. The beautiful 4.7 inch Super AMOLED HD display, 2GB of RAM, 8 megapixel HD camera and 2 megapixel front-facing camera all came together to create one of the most cohesive devices you’ll ever see. Oh, and TouchWiz finally stopped sucking with this release.
Sure, it was made out of plastic and it didn’t come to most markets as a quad-core behemoth, but the Samsung Galaxy S3 was the finest phone out for the money, and it still holds its own up against more compelling offerings as we head into 2013.

HTC DROID DNA

The significance of the HTC DROID DNA is not lost on me — any device that can boast a 1080p display with just 5 diagonal inches to pack all those pixels into deserves a badge of honor in my book. While this may not have been the smartphone that kept HTC’s device lineup from going stale — you can thank the original HTC One X for turning that tide — it definitely pushed the company further than we thought it would be at this point.

The device also featured Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, a powerful solution that didn’t guzzle a ton of juice. 2GB of RAM, a very nice 8 megapixel camera and Verizon’s 4G LTE radios made this one of the hottest devices in the coldest of months. HTC Sense 4+ brings a very debloated suite of enhancements, and it’s one of the first times we can say that HTC Sense isn’t a total downer on top of pure Android.

Nexus 4

What, you thought a “best phones” list would go up without a Nexus device sitting somewhere? The Samsung had a nice run with the Nexus line of phones, concluding with the Galaxy Nexus for now, but it’s time to let someone else step up to the plate. That someone else happens to be our friends at LG who left their stamp on what is known as the Nexus 4.

This device obviously gets brownie points for its lack of a custom user interface on top of pure Android 4.2 goodness, as well as for that very attractive starting price of $300. Shipping snafus aside, this is a fine device that not many can contend with this year. It has all the makings of a superphone, including the 4.8 inch HD display, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 8 megapixel camera, and more without the heinous costs usually associated with owning these beasts.But even with all those juicy specs it’s worth taking time to acknowledge and admire the work that’s gone into the engineering work. LG has arguably crafted its best device ever with the Nexus 4 with the beautiful glass covering the chatoyance texture on the back, and the tapered edge-to-edge glass covering the display.

Other bits and pieces, like Qi Wireless charging, NFC, and more make it a no-brainer for our #2 spot. Even with some annoyances — like the limited storage space, lack of microSD card slot, and a non-replaceable battery — this phone was the cream of the crop for 2012.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

I’ll admit it — the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is not for everyone. That 5.5 inch HD display makes this one weird device to hold, and depending on the size of your jeans it could be hard to stuff into your pockets. Still, Samsung has concocted one of the most compelling devices we’ve seen not only this year, but ever.

Samsung took a huge gamble with the size of this device, but what it allowed them to do is quite stunning. For starters, he Wacom-enabled digitzer embedded into the display comes together with an improved S Pen to make everything — from art to natural writing — way more feasible than it’s ever been on a smartphone. The S Pen also enabled some nice productivity features, like the ability to hover over your calendar entries and email headers to see more without having to jump into them.

The bigger chassis allowed Samsung to cram a 3,100 mAh battery inside which makes for all day battery life on moderate usage. The bigger screen allows you to use two apps at the same time. No, really. And what’s all that multi-tasking without a quad-core 1.6GHz Exynos processor and 2GB of RAM to keep up with it?
TouchWiz has never been anyone’s favorite skin — we all like pure Android around these parts — but if you had to be stuck with one OEM-made interface then you’d want it to be this. Coupled with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Samsung has created a very functional and useful suite of tools for your pleasure.
It’s hard to think that something within Samsung’s own ranks could completely outclass the Samsung Galaxy S3, but by gosh they’ve done it. Again, this is more of a circumstance of timing than anything else. This device released much later than the Galaxy S3, so Samsung was afforded access to the latest technology to stuff inside this beast.

And the most beautiful thing is that Samsung knows all the little details still matter. People still want removable batteries, microSD card slots, et. al and Samsung delivers on that quite nicely with this package. It’s needless to say, at this point, that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is our top smartphone of 2012, and we’d be surprised to see many of you folks disagree.

After a long wait, LG India has started rolling out Android 4.0 update for Optimus 2X users in the country.

The Android 4.0.4 update brings new Optimus 3.0 UI, Face unlock, performance improvements, better browser and lot more ICS goodness to this first dual-core smartphone of the world.

Available now via LG Mobile Support Tool and OTA, the update is about 686MB in size and carries the version number v30b.

Mobile devices ensure that catching up with the latest news and feeds is a doddle. Whether you’re looking for a magazine, or just want an update from your favorite sources, there are more apps available than most people would care to count. Press, a Google Reader app for Android, is a prime example of such an app done properly, and not only it organizes your content in an easy-to-find interface, but is arguably the best looking application in its field.

As somebody who has always enjoyed the medium of RSS, I have seen many different apps in the past five years or so, and while there have been one or two noteworthy stand-outs, like Reeder on iOS, I daresay none have come close to toppling Press, at least on Android.

Everything within the app is a mere swipe away, and since there are no ads, you won’t find yourself unwittingly redirected if you become a little swipe-happy. It syncs with Google Reader very easily indeed, and if you spend a lot of time on the subway, you can file much of your content away for offline reading.

The slick nature of the zooming functionality is somewhat akin to Flipboard, and the ability share and bookmark specific articles is another Press feature many of you will have become accustomed to on the world’s most popular webzine app.

Having played around with this app for a considerable amount of time, I am very impressed, and it certainly comes good on its impeccable reputation. Hitherto, I’ve been using Feeddler Pro on iPhone and iPad, but for my Nexus 7, I am definitely going with Press as my go-to option for Google Reader.

It costs just $1.99, and is easily the best we’ve seen for Android here at Redmond Pie. Sure, RSS readers are being replaced by the likes of Twitter, but for the traditionalists, I challenge you to find a better offering than Press.

Despite being in the closest of relations with Google and therefore enjoying a privileged front-row seat at any new Android version premiere, Motorola is yet to become the fierce Samsung opponent we know (or hope) it can be.

And while we can’t exactly count on a Droid Razr M successor to overturn the company’s fortunes altogether, we’re excited to hear for the first time about a so-called Razr M HD. We don’t know how this new phone might look and when it could see the light of day (no, “sometime in 2013” is not an accepted ETA), but what we do have today is a spec sheet for the handheld.

Now, before moving any forward, we have to warn you – this is nothing else but an unverified rumor and those are, as you know, a dime a dozen. So what you should do is grab a bag of popcorn, an extra pound or two of salt and look at the following details as if you’d be watching a sci-fi movie:

And now that the “movie” is over, let’s see what we can make of it. First off, we have to underline one very important thing – while we don’t want to discredit PhoneArena’s “anonymous source”, it’s pretty weird how many things this mysterious tipster knows already.

These details usually leak drop by drop, so to see such an ocean of information spilling all at once is just… suspicious. Especially when the first-gen Razr M is just three months old, which means the HD version can’t possibly come before next summer.

Even more bizarre and far-fetched is the battery capacity of this alleged Droid Razr M HD. We would definitely love to see a 3,300 mAh “ticker” inside the bad boy, but do you really think Moto will be bumping the battery with a whole 1,300 mAh on a phone from one generation to the other? I for one don’t.

The rest of the info seems legit, although a couple of things still don’t add up. We understand for instance that Motorola wants to keep this targeted at the mid-range niche, but is it really a good idea to equip it with the same old 1.5 GHz MSM8960 CPU and 1 GB of RAM? Also, isn’t the whole thing a little too similar to the Droid Razr HD?Unfortunately, those and all other questions you might have will probably only find their answers months from now, so let’s just wait and see, okay?

HTC and the gang had some gifts to bestow upon its HTC One S users this holiday season. Specifically, the HTC One S received Android 4.1 Jelly Bean across the region of Europe. This massive update comes in at over 600MB large, but with the extensive suite of tools and UI customization that is HTC Sense we didn’t expect a petite package.

HTC Sense itself hasn’t changed much here, but you do get a few new goodies to play around with. The biggest change will be the addition of Google Now and the new Google Search experience, on-device voice input, expanded notifications and Project Butter. Most users in Europe should be seeing the update on their unlocked handsets, but those on carrier editions needn’t worry if nothing is available yet.

Updates are always subject to carrier approval and testing, so you’ll want to take it up with your provider of choice if you are unsure as to why you have yet to receive the upgrade. Be sure to check for the upgrade within your device’s settings menu, and flip that handy WiFi switch to “on” because your bandwidth will be taxed like it’s never been taxed before. Have at it!

Users of Verizon's Motorola DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX have received a lovely Christmas present from the manufacturer. Multiple reports have confirmed that Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is now seeding to the first generation DROID RAZR family.The update is available as a rather large over-the-air download. 

It brings a host of improvements to the devices including Google Now and Project Butter. The latter is bound to make the user experience on the duo of devices a lot more pleasant, given their ageing hardware.

Curiously, Verizon Wireless has been mum on the update for both devices. Still if you are an owner of either one of the two, fill up your battery and check for an update manually.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has started getting upgrades to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS. For the moment this upgrade will be limited to users in UK, other regions to follow soon. Depending on the Samsung upgrading history in context to India, we assume the upgrade will soon head to India as well.

The new upgrade comes with a good number of performance and UI improvements like improved orientation, browser performance, camera UI, better notification management etc. This upgrade will also enable the tablet to support the USB audio docks. With improved UI, the device will be able to run more power efficiently and will result in to a better battery backup. After the upgrade Samsung Galaxy Note Tab 2 will be able to enjoy many features of Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 as well.

There is no word on Jellybean update for the device. With Google Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 offering advanced versions of a Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update, Samsung might have to work upon further upgrades sooner.
