A photo has been leaked today of the next-generation RIM-made BlackBerry 10 device by the name of BlackBerry Z10, a machine that’s set to run an all-touch version of the mobile software coming out later this month. These handsets are said by the source to be in testing mode and that one is being carried by Verizon (scope the branding in the upper left) and the other is being carried by AT&T.




The source is a device tester (not from the press, we must assume) who has provided the image to Business Inside who also quote him listing a selection of features from the phone. This machine looks to be appearing on either carrier with essentially the same size and shape, this ringing true with our prediction that we’re going to see a lot more Hero Device strategy in 2013 – read our Android Predictions for 2013 as well for some spooky similarities.

In the lead up to BlackBerry 10‘s January release, there have been plenty of leaks for us to get excited about. Anticipation has been running high, and we’ve seen more than a few quick shots of what’s rumored to be the BlackBerry Z10 handset. While the Z10 is an all touch BlackBerry 10 phone, its sibling the X10 is more like the BlackBerry devices we’re used to seeing, physical QWERTY keyboard and all. The X10 hasn’t popped up quite as often, but today it’s making headlines with a new set of leaked pictures.

In the images, which come from an anonymous N4BB reader, we get up close and personal with what’s reportedly the BlackBerry X10. These images do a pretty good job of showing off the size of the screen as it relates to the full keyboard, and we have to say that it looks pretty cool. In this era of smartphones with screens that stretch across nearly the entire face of the device, RIM is sticking with the physical keyboard (at least in this instance) – something that made BlackBerry so iconic back in the day.

Indeed, some BlackBerry fans probably wouldn’t like losing the physical keyboard in favor of a larger touchscreen, while others who don’t like typing on a touchscreen will find some value in it as well. RIM, of course, will be offering all touch BlackBerry 10 devices once the new operating system arrives next year, so if you’re the kind of consumer who has no interest in a physical keyboard, you’ll be covered as well.There are a lot of people who are anxious to see what RIM will do with BlackBerry 10, and its January 30 launch event is coming up fast. We’ve seen the all-touch BlackBerry Z and in the same article we mentioned that “classic” BlackBerry devices will also be offered, featuring full QWERTY keyboard beneath the touchscreen. Well, what we have here is the first image of such (N-Series) device that looks promising. 

As you can see, it has an edge-to-edge screen AND Bold 9900-esque keyboard, meaning that you’ll not only be typing comfortably (read: fast), but you’ll also get to see a ton of content on the screen.

The resolution of that screen is not confirmed yet, but the little bird told me it will be 720×720 pixels. We’ll get all details when RIM officially announces new phones…

While Google and Apple are both training their guns on one another, Microsoft has been slowly climbing the ladder with its Windows Phone platform at the expense of RIM and its BlackBerry platform. During the last 12 weeks, Windows Phone managed to overtake BlackBerry and take the number 3 position.

Windows Phone taking the number 3 position comes as no surprise as the platform is more in the spotlight these days when compared to BlackBerry. RIM at the moment is struggling to get its BlackBerry 10 platform off the ground, while Microsoft has Nokia to give Windows Phone the push it needs to become the third biggest ecosystem.

The news regarding Windows Phone's new found success came from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, which also reported that Apple achieved its highest smartphone share in the U.S with 53 percent share of the market, while Android follows closely behind with 41.9 percent. Windows Phone market share is now 2.7 percent, not huge by any means, but at least Microsoft and Nokia achieved the first step of becoming the third biggest ecosystem in the U.S. The next push for Windows Phone is to become the third ecosystem worldwide, and from there on, anything is possible.

Taking a look across Europe, the Windows Phone platform appears to be gaining on RIM and could become number 3, if BlackBerry sales fail to take off in 2013. According to Kantar, Android holds pole position in Europe with 61 percent of all sales, while Apple sits far behind with 25 percent. The majority of Android's success came from Samsung, which accounts for 44 percent of all Android smartphones sold.

Kantar didn't mention Windows Phone and BlackBerry market share in Europe. It's more than likely they are below 1 percent.

"Nokia is managing to claw back some of its share in Great Britain through keenly priced Lumia 800 and 610 prepay deals. The next period will prove crucial in revealing initial consumer reactions to the Nokia 920 and HTC Windows 8X devices," the report said.

As it stands right now, Nokia is the reason behind Windows Phone growth. If this momentum continues with the recent launch of the Lumia 920, there is a good chance Nokia recover its past glory.

While not everyone is convinced RIM has what it takes to stay relevant in the mobile game, the Canadian company keeps pushing its agenda forward. To that end they’ve secured Vodafone UK as one of its customers and it will start selling BlackBerry 10 devices from the day one.

It’s unclear which BlackBerry phones the Big Red carrier will offer, but it’s likely they’ll opt for both an all-touchscreen model and the one that also sports a QWERTY keyboard. That’s just me speculating and we’ll rather have to wait for January 30th to see what Vodafone and other operators have in tow.

And while we’re sure RIM will do its distribution right, we’re still not convinced that will be enough to put BlackBerry back to the map. This is not to say we’re not cheering for RIM, we’re just afraid that it could be too late for them to return to the party.

Its not the first time a Blackberry 10 device has been leaked, but seems the name of first device to run the latest BB OS is confirmed now. Folks at unwiredview have got their hands on a promotion picture of RIM revealing the name of first device as Blackberry Z10. Further, they disclose that Blackberry might also unveil a BB 10 phone physical QWERTY which could be named as Blackberry X10.

Seems getting rid of the traditional naming convention which carried a series name e.g. Bold, Curve, Storm followed by a 4 digit number, is one among the RIM’s reformation strategies.

As per the mobile pundits this could be the last chance for Blackberry which was considered as a ‘dying brand’ a few months ago. BlackBerry was once the juggernaut among smartphones. It was the smart phone when there were no other smart phones on the market. With a stranglehold over the corporate market they were able to keep their domination up for years as the high end mobile phone for the power user on the go. On January 9th, 2007 that all started to fall apart with the release of the iPhone. Yes, BlackBerry was able to keep their spot by lowering prices on the consumer end and due to their high infiltration into the consumer and primarily business markets for as long as they had but as contracts begin to expire so did their marketshare. Many companies kept them as mandatory for how much they had placed into BlackBerry Enterprise security in their companies but it was only a matter of time as people stopped using them unless they had to and even then would be overlooked for people bringing their own devices into the work environment.

Time passed and BlackBerry seemed to not listen to what the consumers wanted until they have become a fraction of the market that they once were. Now though BlackBerry hopes to start reclaiming their lost userbase with the upcoming release of BlackBerry 10 and a new line of forms to support it. The new phones, which are still not being truly consumer tested, are being promised to be a shift from the company’s record of featureless devices. They are trying to bring in a fully social experience while still keeping Enterprise security in place for everyone that it is a major concern for.

The next generation of BlackBerry’s are still slightly light on information though a few important pieces are now available both as press releases and as notes to developers.

First up we have a solid resolution setup for the phones having been announced. The full touchscreen devices that will be available will have a 720p or 1280 x 720 resolution at the 16:9 aspect ratio. Devices that will have the traditional QWERTY keyboard that BlackBerry is long known for will have a 720 x 720 screen.

Whlie there are 2 official launch devices confirmed it is rumored that thare are up to 6 devices fully in development so while 2 should come out immediately 4 more may be available shortly after before the year is out, specs on all of these are still guesswork.

The big feature being touted by BlackBerry 10 though is that it has decided to slightly enter the social market. In 2011 RIM purchased a company called Gist which has quite a few innovative contact management ideas. It’s a new way to interact with your contacts and as BB10 will synch up information from all of your contacts: status updates, meetings, tweets, facebook updates, and a variety of other places it looks as if they are taking the ideas of Gist and building it into the core of the system.

BlackBerry 10 is the operating system that will make or break RIM. The company has fallen on such hard times and it’s hard to imagine they can even pull out of the downward spiral that they have fallen into and this is their last chance to try to reclaim lost users and find new ones. Will they be able to pull it off? Only time and the release and consumer usage of BlackBerry 10 can answer that.

RIM is facing troubling times as it continues to lose money, trying to stem the problem by cutting jobs and focusing development on BlackBerry 10 for a rollout in the first quarter of 2013.

 In the meantime, the company is hoping to sell off some unwanted assets, not unlike what Nokia has been doing as of late. According to Reuters, RIM is looking for a suitor for NewBay, its cloud services provider.RIM acquired NewBay, a provider of photo, video, and social-networking tools for smartphones and computers, in October 2011 for reportedly around $US100 million, as it sought to roll out a new strategy to stem its steady decline. RIM declined to comment on the sale report.

When RIM bought it in late 2011, NewBay had over 80 million subscribers. NewBay stores media on its own servers and delivers it to any internet-connected device, including mobile phones, personal computers and tablets.Its share price has fallen more than 70 percent over the course of the last year, as RIM has continued to hemorrhage market share to the likes of nimbler competitors like Apple and Samsung.

RIM's shares closed more than 6 per cent higher at $US8.29 on Friday on the Nasdaq, after Bloomberg reported that tech giant IBM had at one point considered buying RIM's enterprise division.

Have you ever encountered the rumours about a 10-inch big Playbook.Recently, a 10-inchBlackberry Playbook variant popped up in Vietnam. The Canadian smartphone and tablet maker Research in Motion was recently in news about a possible launch of a bigger version of Playbook, its flagship Tablet device, sometime this year. The leaked 10-inch model of Playbook was spotted by a forum named Tinthe. The leaked version bears a SIM card slot that is expected to be used with an LTE modem.

This is what critics were able to gauge from outside and no one knows what’s going on inside this black tablet. So, the exact specifications and processor information about it is not available till now. But from outside, its more like an enlarged version of the old Playbook with black bezel, matte-finish black casing,a front facing camera, a second camera on the backside, narrow cut-outs on the sides for speakers and pong pins for docking station. 

The recently leaked roadmap suggests that the possible launch date for the larger ‘Blackforest’ Playbook is shifted in the later half of 2013. The same roadmap also reveals the launch of a 7-inch 4G Playbook in the last quarter of 2012. These leaks comes as a contradiction for the news about RIM cancelling the plans for launching a 10-inch tablet.

The already existing 7-inch Blackberry Playbook runs on the new BlackBerry Tablet OS, based on QNX Neutrino, and runs apps developed using Adobe AIR. A later announcement from Research in Motionconfirmed the merging of its smartphone OS and tablet OS as Blackberry 10 and the new 10-inch Playbook variant most probably will run on this new Blackberry 10 OS.

These new variants might prove to be the elixir for the smartphone manufacture which is already grappling with its ebbing market share. Meanwhile, RIM minced no words on the leak issue.

Patience is on its lowest limits as RIM keeps delaying the release date of its upcoming smartphone platform - dubbed BlackBerry 10. However, it looks as RIM is working on a fantastic operating system slated to debut in early 2013.

Last month, folks at N4BB came up with some alleged images of the new BlackBerry Messenger for BlackBerry 10 OS. The tech site is back again with more pictures associated with the new messenger. The latest images of the messenger showcase the user interface and keyboard layout.

The tech site hints at several hidden features in the messenger that can only be pulled up with user gestures and keyboard shortcuts, saving some precious screen real estate. As a hint, for N-series smartphone that feature a physical keyboard, shortcuts can be like C for new chat, N for next day, T for top, and S for search.

Previous rumors suggest that BlackBerry Messenger in BB10 will include themes support allowing users to change colors of the messenger. Light themes will give best readability, while dark themes will improve battery performance by minimizing power drawn by the OLED display.

According to a previous report, RIM is working on a Siri-like voice assistant app for BlackBerry 10 OS. Rumors are rife that BBM will support voice controls. In the recent past, RIM also confirmed that BBM will support video chat.

We still have an annoyingly long time to wait before we get to see any real BlackBerry 10 devices, so concepts are pretty much the only option available to us. This concept is one that looks pretty sweet, especially if you like the more classic BlackBerry style. Of course, we won't be seeing a model like this anytime in the near future as RIM has reportedly scrapped the Milan, which would have had a physical keyboard, in favor of just the singular BlackBerry London with a full touchscreen.




The concept itself looks quite nice. It was designed by Jon Anastasiadis who certainly went pretty deep into the small details of the device. The concept is for a slider phone with a touchscreen and physical keyboard, something close to a highly updated BlackBerry Torch. Anastasiadis added a micro trackpad just above the T and Y keys on the keyboard, which seems like a nice idea, but might be a bit too small for functional use.




Another interesting detail is that Anastasiadis used an angled keyboard on the device, which looks very at home on the BlackBerry, and it should. RIM was actually awarded a patent recently for just such an angled keyboard, you know, because angling the keys on a keyboard is a completely novel idea that is worthy of a patent...

A northern California jury has ordered Research In Motion to pay $147.2 million in a patent lawsuit, the latest setback to hit the BlackBerry maker.




The Waterloo-based company was fresh out of a tumultuous annual general meeting when the verdict came down Friday in the suit over a remote management system for wireless devices.




A technology analyst says the decision comes at the worst time for RIM, which reported a first quarter loss and delayed the release of its much-hyped BlackBerry 10 operating system until next year.




Carmi Levy says the case will have a significant "fiscal and psychological impact'' on the technology giant, already targeted by critics and grumbling shareholders.




Levy says fighting the verdict - a move RIM says it is considering - will divert key resources the company should be using to refocus and get back on track.
