Apple's A6X processor, which is found in the company's fourth-generation iPad, might soon see its producer switched from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC).

Apple has agreed with TSMC to initiate trial production of its A6X processor during the first quarter, Taiwan-based Commercial Times is reporting, according to the AFP, which obtained a copy of the report behind a paywall. The trial period could decide whether TSMC will be given the entire A6X order.

Samsung, Apple's arch-rival in the mobile space, is currently producing the company's A6X processor. However, with their legal and competitive struggles increasingly weighing on their business relationship, reports have suggested that Apple has been looking for a change. In October, CNET reported that Apple was considering a drawdown in its reliance upon Samsung's processor production. Gus Richard, a chip analyst at Piper Jaffray, told CNET that Apple was "working with TSMC." Another chip industry source told CNET at the time that "the Apple-Samsung relationship has deteriorated to such a poor point that they're just looking to fill contractual obligations, then make a change."

That said, those sources indicated that Apple's switch to TSMC would coincide with its transition to 20 nanometers. Still, a source told CNET last year that Apple was planning to kick off the design process early on this year, and then go into production in full force by the end of 2013 -- a scenario that might be playing out with this latest move.

It's important to acknowledge, however, that this is just a trial production. Apple and TSMC are testing the waters to see if the latter can deliver enough solid processors to handle demand and accommodate Apple's notoriously high standards for chip quality. If TSMC can pull it off, Samsung might be pushed out. If not, Apple might have to go back to the drawing board.

CNET has contacted Apple for comment on the report. We will update this story when we have more information.

Google and its Android operating system for smartphones and tablets is claiming a victory over rival Apple, as computer software designers responsible for making iPhone and iPad apps are switching their allegiance. To date, Apple devices have had a huge advantage over rival smartphones because they offer many more sophisticated apps such as games and business tools.’

However, this head start is being eroded as devices running the Google Android software now have access to a growing and increasingly impressive library of downloads, the Daily Mail reports. According to the paper, the Google software is running on three out of every four smartphones and tablets sold ahead of Christmas, which has created a huge and growing market for App developers.

In November, Apple had about 700,000 available Apps, which is about the same number as those vailable from Google's Android App store. In September, Google announced that 25billion Apps had been downloaded to Android devices, while Apple hit 35 billion in October, the paper said.

Buoyed by its temporary win, Apple made a request back in November for the court to include more Samsung smartphones and tablets that it believes infringe on its invalid patents, a list that includes the Galaxy S3 in Jelly Bean flavor, the Galaxy S3 Mini, and a few other devices.

Especially for the Galaxy S3 Mini, Samsung said that it was rather odd of Apple to target a device that’s yet to be officially released in the United States. But Cupertino continued to press on by reasoning that it’s already selling on Amazon.

After arguing back and forth, and an assurance from Samsung that it’s not “making, using, selling, offering to sell or importing the Galaxy S III Mini in the United States”, a court filing shows that Apple has finally agreed to drop the Galaxy S3 Mini from the list of allegedly infringing devices.

While things are looking up for the smaller Galaxy S3 variant, Apple said that it retains the right to change its mind if the circumstance changes.

The previous-gen iPod nano certainly whet the appetites of those dreaming an iWatch. For some reason, the idea of the wearable iOS device is something people seem to really yearn for, and although said nano was little more than a trumped-up, iOS-ified iPod nano with a separately-sold wrist strap, it gave us a glimpse, perhaps, into the future. Today, the iWatch rumors have been reignited once more, and as well as the possibility of a release in the first half of 2013, the speculators are touting a possible 1.5-inch OLED display, Bluetooth 4.0, and – get this – the involvement of chip-making extraordinaire Intel.

If you’ve been quietly anticipating the prospect of an iWatch, these are arguably some of the most exciting rumors hitherto – particularly that of Intel’s alleged attachment to the project. According to Chinese blog TGBUS (via iMore), the supply chain for the product also points to an RiTdisplay 1.5-inch OLED screen, and while the Cupertino company has utilized Intel processors for its Mac range, this would be the first mobile device to see such implementation. Apple’s favoritism toward LED over OLED would also be another first, suggesting Apple is really prepared to break the mold in bringing this intriguing product to market.

Much like the iPad mini prior to its release a couple of months back, it’s a rumor that – despite resolute skepticism – simply will not pass, and although today’s reports should be taken with the proverbial pinch of salt, it would be naïve to dispel anything at this point.

As I mentioned earlier, there does seem to be a strong undercurrent of desire for an iWatch, but considering many of us have ditched the traditional wristwatch in favor of compulsively checking our smartphones for the time, is the market really crying out for an Apple-made watch?

Whatever the case may be, Apple will need to do what it has done with all its products, in making it seem "cool." The idea seems, to me, a little bit "geeky" as is, and the last thing the Cupertino company will want is a product stigmatized as too geeky for the general population.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the matter, so please drop us a comment on our Facebook or Google+ pages, and let us know if you would seriously consider buying such a product.

Apple has patented a method that could help propel traditional glass screens into a flexible future. The new patent, first discovered by Wired, was awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. U.S. patent 8,336,334 details a method of using heat while bending glass over a mold in order to encourage a particular shape -- and so who's to say that Apple's iPhone and iPad might not one day sport the curved equivalent of a traditional, straight glass screen?

Apple's not alone in exploring the possibility of flexible screens for gadgets. Samsung, for instance, plans to show off at CES 2013 next month a 5.5-inch flexible phone screen. Nokia has also toyed with flexible phones in its research labs.

As part of the "slumping" process, the way glass is bent over a mold, Apple's new patent explains how the method can be used to dynamically change glass shapes to create a bend or curve without overstretching the glass or causing cracks created by air vacuums. In addition, Apple's patent focuses on the method, system and tools needed for this kind of high-temperature processing which can be applied to "small factor electronic devices," including mobile phones and user input devices -- which may suggest a curved mouse or touchpad for the iPhone and iPad could be a future prospect.

Apple is well-known for the vast amounts of patent filings it tends to submit. Recently, the company secured a patent that covers the design of flipping pages on a digital screen, as well as a filing a patent application that could result in near-field communications technology becoming integrated with its Passbook app.

And of course there's no guarantee that a patent for a particular technology will ever lead to a commercial product using that technology.

Apple was awarded a patent for connectors that allow SIM cards can easily be replaced or removed in a device.

The patent covers connectors that allow for multiple methods of inserting a SIM card, including the "plunger system," in which a user pushes on a plunger rod to eject the SIM card. The method is also resistant to damage if inserted the wrong way. The patent was first identified by Patently Apple.

The connector patent covers multiple kinds of SIM cards (it doesn't specify which one), from the larger standard ones to the micro SIM cards that Apple uses in its mobile devices. Apple also mentioned multiple devices, including cellphones, tablets, netbooks, monitors, media centers, and laptops, that could use the connector with wireless technology exploding. The connector includes a plastic housing, plunger rod, lever for the plunger rod, contacts, retaining clips on the sides of the connector, and a metallic shield bent to fit in the axis point.

The patent win comes after Apple battled with other industry stalwarts over the future of SIM card design, with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute ruling on a standard for SIM cards. Apple had pushed its nano SIM card technology, and promised free use of the technology in exchange for similar terms for their own industry-standard technology, an offer that its competitors balked at.
Having an approved patent gives Apple further ammunition if the industry continues to fight over industry standards.

What’s a morning without any new Apple rumors? Well, there’s speculation that the tech giant is readying production of another iPad mini with a Retina display within the next few months, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Doug Freedman.

In a research note, Freedman said the “iPad Mini Gen-2: Apple’s gen-2 iPad mini is getting pulled-in, and is likely to have several new suppliers, with TXN gaining content.” Supposedly, the term “pulled-in” means that Apple plans to push up the next iPad mini’s launch schedule. This isn’t surprising if consider what the company just did with releasing a revamped version of the fourth-generation iPad, only eight months after its predecessor.

Of course, like most rumors, take this with a grain of salt. We don’t have any specifics on an exact time frame for release — not to mention — the first gen iPad mini hasn’t finished its global roll out yet. So if these rumors are true, we should expect the next iPad mini to be announced late spring or early summer. An early release will certainly cause users to think twice about getting the mini that’s out now.

Regardless, we can expect the next iPad mini to launch sometime in 2013.

The original iPhone has finally won a patent for Apple nearly six years after its debut.
Granted yesterday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the patent is actually for the design of the phone, specifically "the ornamental design of an electronic device."

In addition to Apple design guru Jony Ive and the late Steve Jobs, other people credited for the invention are Bartley Andre, Daniel Coster, Daniele De Iuliis, Richard Howarth, Duncan Kerr, Shin Nishibori, Matthew Rohrbach, Douglas Satzger, Calvin Seid, Christopher Stringer, Eugene Whang, and Rico Zorkendorfer.

The original iPhone was unveiled by Jobs in January 2007 at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. The late Apple co-founder told the crowd that "we're going to make some history together today."

Touting features that we now take for granted in our phones, Jobs called the device a "video iPod and a regular iPod, plus a phone." And he said that "it's widescreen when you hold it in landscape mode, on its side." To show that the iPhone really was a phone, Jobs made a call to Ive during the demonstration.

The iPhone wasn't the first smartphone to hit the market. But it was arguably the first to revolutionize the smartphone industry as we know it today

We recently heard that Apple’s  iPhone 5 would be launching in China this month, and Apple has now started selling the iPhone 5 in China, and the device is expected to be extremely popular in the country.
We recently heard that Chinese carrier China Unicom have received more than 300,000 reservations for Apple’s iPhone 5 in China, the device retails for the equivalent of $849 for the 16GB model.
We suspect the launch of the iPhone 5 in China will help Apple increase their sales of the iPhone 5 significantly over the holiday period, and we are interested to find out how many iPhone 5′s Apple manages to sell by the end of the year.

Apple’s product naming polices can be somewhat confusing and arbitrary: And today an audience member at the D10 conference called Apple CEO Tim Cook out on the somewhat bizarre nomenclature, “How did you guys go from an iPad to an iPad 2 to an iPad (?!) and then from an iPhone 4 to a 4s?” It actually doesn’t really stem from any rhyme or reason once you think about it.

“A lot of people ask me that question,” he said. Because it’s a good one.

“Well you look back at iPod,” he reminisced (Cook is a huge fan of the iPod), “We changed it a few times. We changed the size and came up with the ‘iPod Nano.’ Then we changed it massively and then we came up with ‘iPod shuffle.’”

Cook revealed that the naming iterations often accompany massive product shifts and are actually not stemming from any sort of structure. Apparently Apple really names things on a case by case basis, “We went from the MacBook Pro to the MacBook Air to the iMac. You can do it either way is the real story.”

” You can stick with the [same] name and people generally love that (I wonder why), and/or keep upping the number, or keep the same IDs like with the 4s” Cook said, revealing that some times the choices are just arbitrary, for example, the ‘S’ in 4S stands for ‘Siri,’ whereas the S in 3GS stands for ‘speed.’

This is the first time to my knowledge Apple has confirmed this speculation — When the 4s came out many pundits joked that it stood for “Sorry I’m not an iPhone 5″ but Apple never actually did specify what it did stand for.
