Carbon for Android due week of July 22nd as free release due to Google Play restrictions

Carbon, the third-party Twitter client that debuted on webOS before eventually launching for Windows Phone, is headed to Android this month and will be a free download.

Best of all for Android users, Carbon will be made available for free — though that clearly wasn't the plan when work originally started on the project. Rather, Carbon is being offered gratis because its developers have no choice in the matter.


Google doesn't currently accept paid apps from the United Arab Emirates. The restriction has had a negative impact on the team's motivation and even caused Carbon for Android to be temporarily shelved between April and May. It was hoped that Google would announce expanded support for paid apps from new countries at Google I/O, but that obviously didn't come to pass.

Nevertheless, Dots & Lines decided to push forward and provide a premium, ad-free app experience to Android users at no cost. We were impressed by an early peek of Carbon back in March, and though the state of Twitter clients on Android has improved steadily with options like Plume, Twicca, and Tweet Lanes, we're looking forward to putting the public release through the paces.
