"Another thing I had noticed was that my battery seemed to be draining much faster than usual. I realized that the power-consumption was probably a result of the high data-traffic," he posted.

Though the hacker was successful in finding the exact problem behind the issues because of his expertise, the problem should be noticed by Microsoft and rectified soon.

Heathcliff confirmed that the issue got introduced in the Windows Phone 7.8, and wasn't there in any of the previous OS.

When he was trying to find the exact problem, he came across an app on an empty live-tile which needed to be updated.

"So I did a few tests. I watched the Nokia Counters app. I unpinned the app with empty tile. Data usage stopped. Pinning it on the start-menu again and 3G draining started immediately again. In my case, it used about 1 MB per minute!" he added.

Heathcliff's phone started behaving normal after that, however, he has advised Windows Phone 7.8 users to keep a check on their data usage.

"Watch your 3G usage. When it is absurdly high after the WP 7.8 update and one of the tiles is empty, unpin that app from the startmenu and see if the problem is gone," he stated before signing off.

Speculation abounded that this was a move on Google’s part to harm its competition, something fueled by the recent claim by Microsoft‘s Vice President David Heiner that Google is deliberately harming Windows Phone. Another issue fueling speculation was that users could still access Maps via maps.google.co.uk.

Google says that the redirect was only a product decision, not a malicious attempt on its end to backhand its competition. The company then went on to state that Google Maps was designed for WebKit and that because Internet Explorer mobile used a different rendering engine, it could not access Maps. Many pointed out that the explanation didn’t make complete sense, given that the desktop version of IE 10 can access Maps fine. Google then went on to clarify, offering this statement to The Next Web:

“We periodically test Google Maps compatibility with mobile browsers to make sure we deliver the best experience for those users. In our last test, IE mobile still did not offer a good maps experience with no ability to pan or zoom and perform basic map functionality. As a result, we chose to continue to redirect IE mobile users to Google.com where they could at least make local searches. The Firefox mobile browser did offer a somewhat better user experience and that’s why there is no redirect for those users.

With the release of the Nokia Lumia 920, the HTC 8X, and other devices, it seems that the Windows Phone platform is achieving moderate success, if a report from Gartner is to be believed.

Gartner's report is based on the number of monthly active Facebook users via the built-in Facebook app in Windows Phone. As more users sign into Facebook per month, via a Windows Phone device, the figure is represented in actual sales of devices.

The report claims that monthly active Facebook users soared in December, adding more than 500,000 and more than 1 million in Q4 2012 alone. Last year's December only saw 100,000 monthly Facebook active users added and a combined 250,000 for Q4. This number vindicates the platform's success and shows that Windows Phone is moving forward, and could pick up speed in 2013 with the release of the Nokia Lumia 620 for $250 (before taxes).

Bringing all that into actual sales, it translates to around 7.4 million devices sold this quarter, which is an increase from the 4.05 million devices sold in Q3 2012, per a WMPoweruser report. No doubt, Nokia and the Lumia line of Windows Phone 8/7.8 devices had an impact, though it would be interesting to see how each Windows Phone OEM is doing for a greater understanding of the platform's success or lack thereof.

It is always good to see Windows Phone picking up steam; however, the platform's true test will come in 2013 when Samsung launches the Galaxy S4 or Apple unveils its iPhone 5S/iPhone 6.

While Google and Apple are both training their guns on one another, Microsoft has been slowly climbing the ladder with its Windows Phone platform at the expense of RIM and its BlackBerry platform. During the last 12 weeks, Windows Phone managed to overtake BlackBerry and take the number 3 position.

Windows Phone taking the number 3 position comes as no surprise as the platform is more in the spotlight these days when compared to BlackBerry. RIM at the moment is struggling to get its BlackBerry 10 platform off the ground, while Microsoft has Nokia to give Windows Phone the push it needs to become the third biggest ecosystem.

The news regarding Windows Phone's new found success came from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, which also reported that Apple achieved its highest smartphone share in the U.S with 53 percent share of the market, while Android follows closely behind with 41.9 percent. Windows Phone market share is now 2.7 percent, not huge by any means, but at least Microsoft and Nokia achieved the first step of becoming the third biggest ecosystem in the U.S. The next push for Windows Phone is to become the third ecosystem worldwide, and from there on, anything is possible.

Taking a look across Europe, the Windows Phone platform appears to be gaining on RIM and could become number 3, if BlackBerry sales fail to take off in 2013. According to Kantar, Android holds pole position in Europe with 61 percent of all sales, while Apple sits far behind with 25 percent. The majority of Android's success came from Samsung, which accounts for 44 percent of all Android smartphones sold.

Kantar didn't mention Windows Phone and BlackBerry market share in Europe. It's more than likely they are below 1 percent.

"Nokia is managing to claw back some of its share in Great Britain through keenly priced Lumia 800 and 610 prepay deals. The next period will prove crucial in revealing initial consumer reactions to the Nokia 920 and HTC Windows 8X devices," the report said.

As it stands right now, Nokia is the reason behind Windows Phone growth. If this momentum continues with the recent launch of the Lumia 920, there is a good chance Nokia recover its past glory.

Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC this morning released (PDF ) its final results for the third quarter of this year, reporting revenue of $2.397 billion (NT$70.2 billion) for the three month period.

Revenue is down from a little over $3 billion (NT$91.04 billion) in the second quarter.The net income after tax reach $247 million (NT$7.40 billion). On year, HTC’s revenues are down from $4.54 billion (NT$135.8 billion) in October 2011, a drop of 35% over the 12 month period.

Following its poor second quarter, HTC amended forecasts, expecting revenues to come in between $2.34 billion and $2.7 billion (NT$70 billion and NT$80 billion). Even at the low end, HTC expected to see a 22 percent drop — and it only just came in at the low end.

HTC has found it tough competing with Apple and Samsung, falling behind as sales of the iPhone and Galaxy smartphones continue to surge. Apple released its new iPhone 5 handset in mid-September, recording 5 million sales in its first weekend.

Samsung is on target to reach 30 million sales of its Galaxy S III smartphone by the end of the year, predicting that its Galaxy Note 2 will double sales of its predecessor.

In order to compete, and ensure it has a fresh smartphone line-up to compete with its rivals, HTC has released a number of new smartphones in the past couple of months, introducing the HTC 8X and 8S as its first Windows Phone 8 devices and the HTC One X+, a supercharged version of its critically-acclaimed HTC One X.

HTC believes China is well positioned to become a key growth driver as its brand awareness grows and operator partnerships remain strong. It says Asia met expectation for growth since the One family launched in Q2 2012, with sales across North and South Asia in line with expectations.

The HTC Windows Phone 8X and 8S represent devices for the high-end and mid-range consumer, respectively. HTC added during the announcement that it worked with Microsoft to create the flagship phones, though Nokia seemed to be the flagship partner. HTC seems to have managed to create a high-end device without the added width a larger screen brings. 

The HTC 8S arguably offers the more interesting design. It resembles the Lumia 800/900 in design, with a narrow four-inch display and multiple colors on the edge and the back of the phone. Like the HTC Legend Android smartphone, a "chin" at the bottom accentuates the device. The INQUIRER was lucky enough to get some hands-on time with the top-end HTC Windows Phone 8 smartphone ahead of its launch at the beginning of November, and while we couldn't help but be won over by its vibrant design, we think it might struggle to rival Nokia's flagship Lumia 920 smartphone.

Design

According to HTC the design of the Windows Phone 8X is its main selling point, thanks to the way it "mimics" the look of the Windows Phone 8 operating system (OS) and ties in nicely Microsoft's live tile interface.

We got our hands on the "blue" version of the Windows Phone 8X smartphone, which quite frankly isn't blue. Instead, it features a garish purple plastic case, one that we can't see appealing to too many male Windows Phone fans. Still, there are three other colours to choose from - Graphite Black, Flame Red and Limelight Yellow.Still, that's not to say we didn't like it, as despite looking oddly similar to Nokia's Lumia line of smartphones, it's one of the most striking designs we've seen lately. It also feels like it could withstand a fair few tumbles, as its casing felt tough, despite weighing just 130g.

In terms of size, the handset's tapered edges make it feel a lot slimmer than it is, as it's actually quite a chunky device at 132.35x66.2x10.12mm.

Screen

The HTC Windows Phone 8X features a 4.3in HD 720p screen. Although not cranked up to full brightness, the display seemed impressively vibrant and boasted decent viewing angles during our hands-on time with the handset.

That's no doubt thanks to the screen's Super LCD 2 technology, which in previous reviews has proved just as vibrant as the Super AMOLED technology found on the Samsung Galaxy S3.Software

The Windows Phone 8 operating system running on the HTC Windows 8X, with HTC telling us that the software isn't quite ready yet, adding weight to the rumours that Windows Phone 8 might be delayed until November.

HTC also admitted that it hasn't added many unique software tweaks to the Windows Phone 8X handset. The only app that HTC has preloaded is its HTC Hub application, where users can check out the weather, stock updates, apps and news. Not a major selling point, if you ask us. This could put some buyers off, considering that the Nokia Lumia 920 comes preloaded with several Nokia apps, including Drive, Music and Maps.

Speaking of Nokia, HTC said it the Windows Phone 8X will come preloaded with Nokia Maps, which is excellent news for buyers of the handset.

Performance

The HTC Windows Phone 8X handset features Qualcomm's nippy dual-core S4 processor.The handset has no removable battery or expandable memory via microSD card though, unlike the cheaper HTC Windows Phone 8S smartphone. This means that users will be stuck with the handset's 16GB of internal storage and won't be able to replace its battery once it starts to age and stutter.

Camera

HTC looks to be challenging Nokia with claims that the Windows Phone 8X camera is one of its main selling points. It does sound pretty impressive, since it's an 8MP rear-facing camera with an f/2.0 lens, BSI sensor and the ability to capture HD 1080p video.

Although we were unable to give the handset's camera a thorough testing, we were able to fire it up using the dedicated camera key - and while not as fast as the snapper on the Motorola Razr I - it loaded up impressively fast.

There's also a front-facing camera on the front of the HTC Windows Phone 8X perfect for Skype video calling, a feature missing from the cheaper HTC Windows Phone 8S.

First impressions

While the design of the HTC Windows Phone 8X is flashy, we're not sure that the device itself is. Sure, it's more exciting than the Samsung Ativ S, but we don't think it can compete with the Nokia Lumia 920, which comes stuffed full of unique apps and innovative features such as its Pureview camera and wireless charger.
