Sony’s Xperia Z Has Pricing Leaked Out; Roughly $660 Off-Contract

With CES so close we can almost touch it, there’s more news leaking out of everywhere and with big global companies like Sony, the leaks are often hard to contain. With so many offices and markets to take care of it’s hard to keep a lid on things entirely. When it comes to the Japanese company, we’ve been hearing a lot about their upcoming phones, codenamed “Yuga” and “Odin” respectively, and their 1080p displays, amongst other things. We now know that the pair of smartphones will be called the Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL, nice to see Sony hasn’t ran out of letters just yet, right?

It’s pretty great to see that Sony are bringing a truly up-to-date phone to the market, both the Xperia S and the Xperia TL were phones that had a lot going for them but, ultimately lagged behind the competition. With the Xperia S there was a 4.3″ 1280 x 720 display, but it’s Snapdragon S3 processor really let it down and as for the Xperia TL, to come out with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 when the quad-core S4 pro was making its debut was not good timing for Sony. Both of them were admirable phones, sure but, these were Sony’s flagship devices of 2012 and while keeping the form factor below that 4.7″ marker was nice for a lot of users, they still left a lot to be desired.

With the Xperia Z though, it looks like Sony are ready to bring a flagship to market that will take on everyone else, head-to-head. The Z (that actually sounds pretty cool, “the Zee”) will come a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB of RAM and a stunning 5.0″ Full HD (1920 x 1080) display. All brilliant specs and enough to rival HTC’s Droid DNA on Verizon and if Sony can bring the device to more than just AT&T in the States, they might be able to take some of the market away from Samsung and HTC.

Pricing will be very important as well and while it will more than likely be available on contract for AT&T, according to a fresh leak the device is going to cost 19, 990 Thai Baht which works our at roughly $660 – if Google is to be believed. This is apparently the full price of the device and that seems about right for a device like this from a high-end manufacturer. Pricing should vary from region-to-region and a conversion like this is not a true indicator how much it will cost, I’m hoping that Sony will bring the Xperia Z – and its cousin, the Xperia ZL – at a very affordable price point.
