iPhone 5 Jailbreak On iOS 6 / 6.0.1 / 6.0.2 Untethered: What’s The Status, When To Expect?

Many of you who have got a iPhone 5 or any other new iOS device as Christmas present have been asking on whether there is any untethered iOS 6 / 6.0.1 jailbreak available for the devices like iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad mini and so on.

It’s a no surprise that many within the iOS community have grown restless with the lack of a jailbreak for iOS 6. The trouble is, once you become accustomed to using a jailbroken device with the vast quantity of tweaks available, it’s like a drug, and a stock device feels crippled in comparison. The casual swipe to open SBSettings, the luxury of a Notification Center on the lock screen, the enhanced messaging experience offered by tweaks like BiteSMS, or the new multitasking switcher offered by Auxo tweak – these are the kinds of things many iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users have been missing since upgrading to iOS 6, and although the first untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 was released around this point last year, this year unfortunately, we’re still quite a way from that at this point.

Apple has been engaged in something of a cat-and-mouse battle with the jailbreak gurus from the get-go, and while the devs have enjoyed great successes in recent years, the Cupertino company has really stepped its game up with iOS 6 – a release which is proving a very, very tough nut to crack (read more on this in our prequel to this article). And to make things even worse, security researcher i0n1c believes that the upcoming iOS 6.1 will be even more tough to exploit. While things are looking dim as far as a new jailbreak is concerned, all hope is not lost. It seems like David Wang (Planetbeing) is still working on putting all the pieces of puzzle together. While MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team has warned against updating to iOS 6.0.2 (available for iPhone 5 and iPad mini only) for an eventual jailbreak, David believes that not much has changed in kernel of iOS 6.0.2 compared to 6.0.1, which probably means that there’s a good chance any jailbreak for iOS 6.0.1 would also work on iOS 6.0.2, but considering how difficult this jailbreak is proving to be, would you really want to take that chance? So to be on the safe side, we will advise users to avoid 6.0.2 if they can, and definitely avoid iOS 6.1 whenever it is released to public, that is if you don’t want to pull yourself out of contention of enjoying a future iOS 6 jailbreak. If your iPhone 5 or iPad mini happens to be suffering from the issues outlined as fixed in iOS 6.0.2 such as Wi-Fi woes, you have a real decision on your hands, but otherwise, stick with what you have.

Due to this current state of no untethered iOS 6 and iPhone 5 jailbreak available at this point, there are tons of sites on the Internet offering either fake jailbreak tools, or video proofs like the now infamous Dream JB for iOS 6 jailbreak which turned out to be a “social experiment”. The fact anybody could piece together a video and dupe thousands into downloading and running unsolicited software is scary. Not only can the package contain a virus, but said individual can also easily rake in thousands of dollars via any pay-to-use system.

Scammers, spammers, and coders of the Web’s non niceties take great care to ensure their unscrupulous software reaches as many as possible, and by capitalizing on something people want, this can be achieved fairly easily. As such, we strongly urge you not to download anything until a respected jailbreak developer – perhaps, a member of the real Jailbreak Dream Team – has given some kind of approval.
If you see a jailbreak release for iOS 6, check back here at Redmond Pie, because if it’s legit, we’ll have it covered here as soon as it drops. At this point, we don’t see that happening as iOS 6.1 is just around the corner.

Last but not least, those of you on Pre-A5 devices such as the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4G can still tether-jailbreak using either Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze. For instructions, you can always follow our detailed jailbreak iOS 6 and jailbreak 6.0.1 guides posted on the site.
